Originally designed as the military-style Geländewagen back in 1979, it’s an incredible off-roader, thanks to three locking differentials that can essentially turn it into a tank. There are no complaints about the fabulous new engine the G550 gets for 2016, a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 that churns out 416 horsepower, versus 382 ponies in last year’s version, along with 450 lb.-ft. of torque. The seven-speed automatic, the only transmission choice, is beautifully smooth. Inside, complementing the exterior's rigged charm designed back in the late 70s, the interior treats you to the structured amenities and stalwart upright seating usually reserved for a low-security Swedish prison, with leather and supple surfaces standing up surprisingly well for an off-road centered vehicle.
Originally sold new at Mercedes-Benz of North Vancouver, the vehicle has been a local, accident-free BC truck under both of its two careful owners. Recently inspected by an independent 3rd party facility with a full report provided.
The G550 has the same updated electronics as the G63 and 65 AMG models, including a fancier instrument cluster and center stack, as well as driver aids such as blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control. Its recirculating-ball steering remains gainfully capable for anything on-and-off-road; the leather-lined cabin is still narrow, upright, and stingy with passenger space; and, at a glance, the G550 looks pleasantly the same as its rowdier siblings.
